Northeast Ohio Companies Present Biohealth Innovations to the World
By Aram Nerpouni, President and CEO, BioEnterprise
A 14-member Ohio delegation recently attended BIO International, a global conference held in San Francisco attracting more than 15,000 biotechnology and pharmaceutical leaders from around the world.
The Ohio delegation included representatives from BioEnterprise and JobsOhio as well as two Northeast Ohio bioscience companies – YourOmics, Inc. and DAPCEL, Inc.
Northeast Ohio is home to world-class clinical and research institutions, biomedical support organizations and an unmatched workforce that, when combined, create an ecosystem primed for biomedical entrepreneurial success. YourOmics and DAPCEL are two of more than 700 biomedical companies that have made Cleveland, the Medical Capital, their home.
“BioEnterprise and JobsOhio provided us with a highly visible location at BIO International – an opportunity to be part of something we couldn’t do on our own as a young company,” said John Schenkel, president and co-founder of Cleveland-based YourOmics. “We were able to connect with people and generate leads we would have never found if we hadn’t been there.”
YourOmics, launched in December 2015, develops simple, accessible web-based applications allowing any biologist to gain insight from the fruits of the omics revolution. Its applications are designed for ease of use, empowering any scientist with powerful tools and comprehensive data sets to cut through complexity and rapidly obtain the necessary insights to further their research.
DAPCEL was represented at the conference by its co-founders Natalia Tararova, M.S., President and CEO, and Anton Komar, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer. “We were able to meet with industry leaders, potential partners and investors, and evaluate emerging technologies from a wide array of small-scale to large bio companies,” said Komar.
DAPCEL, founded by Tararova and Komar in 2008, provides high-quality protein and cell line services and products ranging from an innovative gene redesign approach for custom protein and antibody production to state of- the-art cell invasion and cell migration assays for companies and academic institutions around the globe.
They also recently launched a new company, SATOR Therapeutics, in collaboration with Peter Chumakov, M.D., Ph.D., and Stephen Charles, Ph.D., focused on developing next generation oncolytic viruses for cancer treatment.
“YourOmics, DAPCEL and the other Ohio companies represented at BIO International demonstrate the diversity and impact of innovative solutions coming out of the state,” said JobsOhio Biohealth Senior Managing Director Aaron Pitts. “Their innovations have the potential to improve and extend life of people across the globe.”
